Gertrude Wamala Karugaba’s commercial practice focuses on finance, banking law, equity and debt capital markets, corporate law, commercial agreements and regulatory support. Gertrude acts for local and international financial institutions as well as large corporates, some of which are listed on regional stock exchanges, on a variety of legal, regulatory, compliance and transactional mandates.
In notable mandates, Gertrude acted as transaction advisor and project manager to dfcu Bank for its purchase of the assets and assumption of liabilities of Crane Bank Limited in what is the largest banking sector acquisition in Uganda.
In significant finance mandates, Gertrude acted as local counsel to the arranger, facility agent and security agent for a syndicated facility to the sponsor and developer of a specialised hospital in Kampala. In capital markets, Gertrude advised a publicly-traded financial services group on a rights issue, and the Uganda Securities Exchange on its demutualization.
In regulatory affairs, Gertrude acts for one of Uganda’s leading telecommunications operators and advises on sensitive regulatory and corporate affairs.
She is a member of the Uganda Law Society and the East African Law Society.
